Restoring Mobile Signal to a Parking Meter System Using Passive DAS

Blog Title Card - Parking Meter Passive DAS

What is a small-cell DAS?

When modern parking systems rely on mobile networks to process payments and transmit data, even a small signal problem can cause major disruption. For one local authority, an entire town centre car park was affected when a new contactless-enabled parking meter stopped communicating altogether.

Mobile Signal Solutions was called in to diagnose and resolve the problem.

Understanding the Challenge

The parking meter used an integrated modem with a SIM card to handle card payments and send usage information back to the council’s management platform. Although mobile coverage across the car park was strong, the meter itself sat inside a solid metal enclosure. This housing effectively trapped the modem inside what engineers call a “signal box”, preventing any mobile network access.

The result was payment failures, frustrated drivers, lost revenue, and a growing list of complaints.

Site Assessment

Mobile Signal Solutions carried out a detailed on-site survey to determine:

  • Available signal strength around the meter
  • Frequency bands used by the modem
  • The best position for external reception
  • The most practical cable routing path

The survey confirmed what was suspected: signal was present outside, but the enclosure blocked it entirely. The task, then, was to bring the outdoor signal safely and efficiently into the cabinet.

The Passive DAS Solution

The team designed and installed a simple Passive Distributed Antenna System (Passive DAS). This low-cost, maintenance-free approach used purely passive components to channel signal from outside the metal casing directly into the modem.

Outdoor Donor Antenna

A weatherproof, high-gain antenna was mounted on the exterior of the meter, positioned with clear line-of-sight to nearby mobile base stations.

Low-Loss Coaxial Cable

An N-type terminated coaxial cable was routed neatly into the enclosure, ensuring minimal signal loss.

Connection to Modem

The coax was adapted to fit the modem’s input using an SMA connector, completing a secure and efficient signal path.

No amplifiers or powered devices were required — the system relied entirely on passive signal transfer.

Lessons Learned

Even in areas with good outdoor coverage, metal enclosures or dense materials can isolate equipment from the available signal. In such cases, a Passive DAS offers a highly effective and compliant solution — delivering immediate improvements with no active components or complex infrastructure.

MSS Mobile Technology provided the full service: survey, design, installation, and testing — ensuring the local authority’s parking system was back online quickly and securely.

Looking Ahead

For councils and commercial operators managing smart infrastructure, reliable mobile signal is essential. Whether it’s parking meters, ticketing systems, or remote monitoring equipment, Mobile Signal Solutions can help restore performance with engineered, compliant installations that simply work.
